Are you Babysitting Your Virtual Assistant?

Exactly how much time in a day, week, or month do you spend “babysitting” your Virtual Assistant?

Yes, we mean babysitting! If you find yourself resolving time consuming issues such as answering questions for what should be simple tasks, training on common programs, or even having to edit grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation you are babysitting your VA!

An experienced Virtual Assistant should be self motivated, looking to optimize their value to your business, and a forward thinker who can even recommend systems and better ways to operate your business effectively. One reason that VA’s can be of great value to a business is that they save you time; you should not have to micromanage, hand hold, or waste time providing general administrative training.

A good VA specializes in innumerable fields due to an extensive administrative background. When you have experience providing administrative support to businesses in multiple industries, it is likely that you have developed a wide range of skills related to being especially effective in the many roles and responsibilities an administrator may hold.

When you hire a Chef, you wouldn’t expect to have to teach them to cook would you? Of course, there are going to be expectations you have or even specialized programs you use that your VA may not be familiar with, and you will need to be patient and effective in training them properly. As highlighted in our “Delegating like a Posh Boss - Insta-Mini-Series”, it is your responsibility when on-boarding a new VA to provide them with clear, concise, and very detailed instructions and training.

It is an investment, so you absolutely want to “Optimize Your Virtual Assistant”.

Before you determine that you are babysitting your VA, check yourself!

  1. Do you have an organized and effective way to communicate with your VA?

  2. Are they completing the tasks that you give them, if so, is it in a timely manner?

  3. Did you provide clear and concise expectations and training at on-boarding?

  4. Is your VA comfortable asking questions or bringing issues to your attention?

  5. Do you have documented processes?

  6. Have you been requiring and consistent with daily task recaps?

Ask yourself these questions to ensure you’ve done your due diligence in making sure your VA has everything they need to optimize their effectiveness. Then you need to do what is best for you and your business and finances.

The bottom line is, if you are babysitting your VA , they may not be as experienced as they led on..or they may be the wrong VA for you altogether.
